Several paths to becoming a preschool teacher

You can choose to study full-time or part-time. If you choose to study full-time, you can also choose one of our lines where you can specialize in your interests such as nature and outdoor life or music, drama, art, and crafts.

If you choose to study part-time, you can combine studies with work. DMMH offers part-time studies both in Kristiansund and Trondheim.

We open for applications on February 1st. The application deadline is April 15th (March 1st for applications based on real competence or special assessment).

Full-time studies

Our full-time studies provide a bachelor's degree and last for 3 years.

Part-time studies

Take a bachelor's degree over 4 years while working. Part-time studies are available both in Kristiansund and Trondheim.

You apply for preschool teacher education through Samordna opptak. 

The application deadline is April 15th (March 1st for applications based on real competence or special assessment).

Admission requirements

For admission to the preschool teacher education, there is usually a requirement for general study competence. You can read more about general study competence on the Samordna opptak website.

Can you combine work and studies?

Yes, many students combine work and studies.

You can complete the preschool teacher education full-time (3 years) or part-time (4 years). Many students both full-time and part-time work alongside their studies. It is up to the individual how much they have the capacity to work in addition to attending mandatory teaching and practice in the education.

What job opportunities do I have as a preschool teacher?

As a preschool teacher, you have a competence that kindergartens demand, and you have many opportunities for the future, both in terms of jobs and further education.

As a trained preschool teacher, you are qualified for a leadership position in the kindergarten and can, among other things, work as:

  • pedagogical leader in kindergarten
  • manager/unit leader for a kindergarten
  • leader in the school leisure scheme (SFO)
  • leader in other child-related areas

As a pedagogical leader, you may be responsible for planning, leading, and evaluating the pedagogical content in the kindergarten, leading and guiding your colleagues, and collaborating with the children's parents.

As a manager, you will be responsible for the daily management of the kindergarten and will be both a pedagogical and administrative leader. You will also have a special responsibility for ensuring that each employee uses their competence.

The pedagogical leader and manager together have a special responsibility for planning, implementing, evaluating, and developing the kindergarten's content. They are also responsible for guiding the rest of the staff so that everyone has a common understanding of the kindergarten's responsibilities and tasks.

As a preschool teacher, you have many opportunities for the future, both in terms of jobs and further education.
