Straight from Kindergarten Teacher Studies to the Dream Job

Anna Østensjø Borrevik (25) is now in her final semester of kindergarten teacher education at Queen Maud University College in Trondheim. She has already secured a permanent job and wants to inspire others to pursue the meaningful and rewarding career of being a kindergarten teacher.

Motivation for the Career Path
Anna's passion for working with children started when she was 14 years old and got the opportunity to be placed in a kindergarten where her aunt worked. This sparked her interest, and before her studies, she worked as an assistant in a kindergarten to gain more experience.
– Being part of laying the foundation for children's development and seeing them explore and learn new things is amazing, beams Anna.
A Meaningful Job with Personal Development
Since her placement in secondary school, she has not regretted her choice and is now ready for the challenges that come with being a fully-fledged kindergarten teacher. Even before submitting her bachelor's thesis, she has secured a job in a kindergarten in Oslo.
Anna sees the transition from study to work as an opportunity to develop even more. The education has provided Anna with skills to better understand people, children, leadership, and practical work.
– The profession will continue to give me value back, and I really like that. When I start my new job in the fall, the goal is first to become confident in my own role as a kindergarten educator. I have to trust that I can do it.

Studied at DMMH in Trondheim

DMMH, Queen Maud University College, is the only educational institution in Norway that has the education of kindergarten teachers as its main task. The school offers various
bachelor's and master's degrees in addition to further education.

– I wanted to study in Trondheim, and here DMMH is the only college with kindergarten teacher education. Another reason I chose this college was because of the wide range of exciting specializations such as nature and outdoor life, multicultural understanding, and music, drama, and arts and crafts. The choice ultimately fell on the bachelor's with an emphasis on music, drama, and arts and crafts since this matched my interests and values, says Anna.

Good Childhoods Create Good Adults

«The job as a kindergarten teacher provides the opportunity to create a safe and supportive environment for the children and help them develop. It is very meaningful work, and you feel like you are helping to create the future. They are the ones who will take care of us when we get older»

Unsure if Kindergarten Teacher is for You?

Anna also has some advice for others considering taking kindergarten teacher education. She points out that the profession of a kindergarten teacher requires care, commitment, and creativity:

– Kindergarten teacher is a rewarding profession in many ways. It is important to initiate play for the children, so you have to be a little proactive and curious. At the same time, you have the daily work with opening, breakfast, dialogue with parents, and planning. Many are unsure if they want to work at a school or in a kindergarten. Therefore, the most important thing is to carefully consider which age group you want to work with.
